5 Bedtime Routine Mistakes Keeping Your Child Awake and How to Fix Them

Bedtime routines are supposed to help your child wind down but often we secretly disrupt their sleep without even realizing it. If putting your little one to bed turns into a long nightly battle and your child refuses to fall asleep check your evening schedule for these five common mistakes.

Active Play and Excitement Right Before Bed

Many parents think that wearing a child out right before bed will help them fall asleep faster. In reality running around tickling or active games overstimulate your child's nervous system. Instead of tiredness you get the opposite effect because the body starts producing cortisol and adrenaline. To fix this switch your child to calm activities at least an hour before bedtime such as drawing looking at picture books or putting together simple puzzles.

Screens and Gadgets in the Evening

Watching cartoons or playing games on a phone before bed is the fastest route to a sleepless night. The bright blue light from screens completely blocks the production of melatonin which is the body's natural sleep hormone. Your child's brain thinks it is still daytime and refuses to shut down. Replace gadgets with reading a paper book that has a calm storyline or simply talk with your child about their day under dimmed lights.

A Routine That Is Too Long or Chaotic

The sequence of actions needs to be clear and short. If your routine includes a bath a snack cleaning up toys reading five stories and long conversations your child will simply get exhausted from the process itself. An ideal evening routine lasts no more than twenty or thirty minutes. The steps should repeat every day in the exact same order like a warm shower brushing teeth one story and sleep. This way your child's brain automatically starts relaxing at the very first step.

No Consistent Bedtime Schedule

If your child goes to bed at nine in the evening on weekdays but stays up until close to midnight on weekends their internal biological clock gets completely thrown off. The body struggles to adapt to such a chaotic schedule. Try to stick to the same bedtime on both weekdays and weekends with a maximum difference of thirty minutes. This helps your child fall asleep quickly and without tantrums.

Wrong Room Atmosphere and No Sleep Companion

Too much heat bright lights or dry air will ruin a good night of rest. Always ventilate the child's room before bedtime because the ideal temperature for sleep is around sixty five to sixty eight degrees Fahrenheit. Falling asleep with the main ceiling light or TV on is another major mistake. Use a dim nightlight with a warm red or amber glow instead and place a single favorite soft toy next to your little one. This plush friend gives your child a sense of security if they happen to wake up in the middle of the night.
