Emotional Intelligence (EQ): The Foundation That Matters More Than Grades

Emotional Intelligence (EQ): The Foundation That Matters More Than Grades

In 2026, the question "How do I teach my child to read?" has been replaced by "How do I teach my child to understand themselves?" Emotional intelligence has become the fundamental skill determining a person's success in the society of the future.

Why is EQ the Base?
A child who can recognize their own anger, sadness, or joy is less prone to stress and finds common ground with peers more easily. Such a child does not suppress emotions but knows how to manage them.

Practical Steps for Parents:
Validation of Feelings: Never say "don't cry" or "there's nothing to be afraid of".

Reflecting Technique: Instead, use the reflecting technique: "You are very angry right now because we are going home; I understand you. It’s frustrating". Once a feeling is named, it is half-conquered.

Emotional Vocabulary: Make it a habit to discuss the feelings of characters in books or cartoons. For example: "How do you think the bunny felt when he lost his basket?".

Role-Play Games: Use dolls or animal figures to act out complex situations. Examples include how toys make up after a quarrel or how they share a favorite item.

The Role of the Right Toys
Toys with "neutral" facial expressions or figures of people and animals are ideal for developing EQ. Unlike interactive dolls that laugh at the press of a button, a simple figure can "be sad," "be happy," or "be offended" along with the child. This provides endless space for working through real-life scenarios.
